Advertising for "The Ugly Truth" will certainly mention that it comes from the same team that gave you "legally Blonde".

What it will probably not mention is that it also from the same people who brought you such classics as "Monster-in-Law" and "The House Bunny"

The Ugly Truth (R) Columbia (95 min.) Directed by Robert Luketic. With Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler. Now playing in New Jersey.
Stephen Whitty's rating: two stars
Ratings Note: This film contains sexual situations, graphic language and brief nudity.

And this is really ugly truth.
Another subtle, but by-the-numbers romantic comedy, "The Ugly Truth" gives the old chestnut about opposites attracting. She is sleek, sophisticated journalist; him a chance and a beer kind of man's-man commentator, and even if they absolutely hate each other at first sight, before too long.

Do I really need to go through it? Can not we all just rewatch "Woman of the Year" instead?

Well, no, not really, because Tracy and Hepburn not vibrator jokes. Nor did they make movies that people thought were the height of sense to have people talking graphically about sex organs, the women wrapped in Jelle O-O or cut to the "nature shots" of copulating monkeys.

"The Ugly Truth" is proud of this. And less.
I like the occasional dirty joke, but the operative word "joke" why "hangover" was such a success was not because it was rude. This is because it was fun. It had settings, situations and punch lines.

"The Ugly Truth" has Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler worker scratching himself. It also has a reason - he coaches her what men like, so she can find a girlfriend, but he ends up falling for her along the way - it feels like something I had seen before. So I knew I had. It was called "He's just not for you."
"The Ugly Truth" is easy to be not so good.

Do not blame it on Apple-cheeked Heigl, who loves the camera (and that's adorably geeky dance). Butler current tough and even charming in the grizzled, CRO-Magnon kind of way.

No, the real problem here is not stars, but the script. It makes Butler tut lunky "comments" that have not passed the patterns on the "The Man Show." It feels just Heigl say dirty words is something funny. His best joke is - well, the finest word "borrowed".

Do you want a good date movie? See "(500) Days of Summer". Want a big cheeky comedy? Wait for "Funny People", which comes out next week. Do you want a smart, female-centered comedy? Wait for "Julie and Julia," comes out next month.
The "truth" hurts.
