Drought in Russia Ripples remaining wheat fields

Friday, August 27, 2010

Russia's harvest indicate that yields of wheat and barley is down sharply, as expected after a major drought this summer, which helped send global wheat prices sharply since June. The implications for Russian consumers and the global market, crop failure translate to a relatively minimal economic impact on the country's agricultural companies, which before the drought was just to catch their stride after a review of Soviet-era collective farms.

The higher prices are in fact made a profitable company, according to an earnings report Friday. Russia will likely produce less grain than it consumed for the first time since 2004 and can import wheat for the first time in a decade. The world's third largest wheat exporter after the United States and Canada. Prosecutors recently raided the bakery in Moscow and charged with price gouging.

On Friday, for delivery in December Wheat was trading at the Chicago Board of Trade for $ 6.95 a bushel - up more than 40 percent from its low in June, before the drought, but down from its high of $ 8.68 on 6 August, after Russia announced an export ban. On Russia's domestic market is now selling for around $ 6.20 a bushel. A poor harvest is used to mean heads will roll in the Communist Party. But the spread of corporate farming in Russia in recent years now means investment portfolios on line.

Vanilla & Passion Fruit Sponge Recipe

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Passion fruit is one of the most generous backyard crops and spring is a good opportunity to get started on planting a new vine or to give someone who's already growing a helping hand. Pretty blue and white flowers are displayed instead of the large white and purple flowers, and the clincher, inedible orange fruit instead of delicious black passion you expected.

Passion thrives on a diet of chicken manure or pelleted fertilizer to promote flowering and fruiting, as citrus foods. Established vines having fruit and grows well be carefully pruned in spring before bloom, to remove excess growth and to avoid major patchwork of stems that develop naturally. Each night of October, Bethel serves dishes from their steamed pork belly, waygu and curry chicken buns for about $ 10 Cocktails, including Blackberry Passion Fruit Caipiroska will also be going for half price.

Uffizi gallery in Florence, Tuscany's capital is home to many masterpieces of this period. In the evening, would the smell of the thick carpet Arabian jasmine clings to the house perfume in the air as we sat on the veranda to see the fireflies dancing through the vegetable garden. It was exciting to get paid to make raw food for the first time and it was fun to get my hands in the kitchen again with access to a vita mixer and Excalibur dehydrator.

Eggs coming from Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa have been recalled in several states over potential salmonella contamination, linked to seven reported cases of Salmonella in Minessota. The affected cartons come in varying sizes and carry plant numbers P1026, P1413 and P1946, followed by a date code ranging from 136 to 225. A national outbreak of salmonella in eggs has sickened hundreds of people since May and appears to be ongoing, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say. The outbreak has been tracked to in-shell eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, which has launched a recall. They were distributed nationwide. The recall was launched Aug. 13. They come in cartons ranging from six to 18 eggs and are marked with plant numbers P-1026, P-1413 and P-1946. The eggs should be returned for a refund and not consumed.

The normal level of laboratory-confirmed cases nationally for this specific type is about 50 cases per week. When that jumped to 200 cases a week in June, public health workers realized they had a problem, says Casey Barton Behravesh, a veterinary epidemiologist with the CDC. Completely cooking eggs reduces the amount of salmonella bacteria in the eggs. Each case of laboratory-confirmed salmonella usually represents 30 cases that were not reported, public health research shows. People sickened in this outbreak could be in the thousands. Salmonella can cause fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea and usually lasts four to seven days. Authorities have received seven reports of Salmonella cases in Minnesota, and they believe that the eggs are the likely culprits.

Wright County Egg, which is based in Galt, Iowa, delivered eggs to food service companies and food distribution centers in eight states, which included Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The states of Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado and California are also included in the recall. Our primary concern is keeping Salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers. As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any Salmonella bacteria present. This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected. Our farm strives to provide our customers with safe, high-quality eggs – that is our responsibility and our commitment.
