Raj Patel says the hidden cost of our consumption causes a great deal of environmental harm and social destruction. Stephen Colbert said in tonight's episode of Comedy Central's Colbert Report that Raj Patel is the next god. I was laughing watching the show tonight as Colbert asked Raj Patel via phone patch if he is indeed a god.

tephen Colbert even twitted: "If raj patel is the next god, this tweet may be the next commandment. thou shalt not buy store brand vanilla wafers!" The Right to the City is a necessary idea, particularly if you think that cities can harbour progressive and ecologically sustainable social change. Stewart Brand , in a Panglossian article seems to think that ’slums will save the planet’, but Mike Davis – an altogether more thoughtful scholar – does too. Sure, cities can be more ecologically and socially sustainable that rural communities, but that doesn’t happen by magic. Nor, as Brand seems to forget, is there anything terribly desirable about living in a slum.

The only deity Patel says he acknowledges is his editor, Picador’s Frances Coady. “Picador really had a vision way more than I did about how the book would work,” Patel said. The publisher created videos and was committed to a word-of-mouth campaign, just as the messiah rumors spread.
