When the propeller came off at 13,000 feet, oil splashed across the plane’s windshield. The pilot tried to make an emergency landing at the Hilton Head airport. Failing, he opted for the beach. As the turbo-prop, pressurized Lancair IV-P fell from the sky and crash landed without engine power, it struck the man as he walked on the shore.
According to news reports, the plane was traveling from Orlando, Florida, to Norfolk, Virginia, when the incident occurred. The route passes over the Atlantic Ocean, where the aircraft apparently lost its propeller almost three miles up in the sky.
