A man who was confused when he was informed by his native state of a surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital pulled a gun and shot and wounded on Thursday as the doctor killed her mother and herself in her room at the world-famous medical center, police said. Pardus then holed up in space for more than two hours of stalemate.
The doctor, identified by colleagues as an orthopedic surgeon David B. Cohen, collapsed outside the eighth-floor where Pardus' mother was treated. It is part of Johns Hopkins University, which has one of the leading medical schools in the world. Harry Koffenberger, vice president of security, said the hospital uses hand-held metal detectors to screen patients and visitors known to be high risk.
Sagittarius has reportedly barricaded in a room located on the eight floor of the building. Police quickly arrived on the scene around 11:12 after receiving reports about the shooting. The surrounding streets were closed as a precaution. Baltimore police are working with a tactical operation to catch the shooter. Investigators are awaiting fingerprint analysis by the FBI to confirm the identity of Pardus. The doctor was shot in the stomach, but is expected to survive.
