We know that 31 May each year, WHO (World Health Organization) will celebrate 'World No Tobacco Day', highlighting the health risks associated with smoking and advocates for effective policies to reduce consumption. Tobacco smoking is the second cause of death worldwide and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide.
The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2010 is "Gender and tobacco", with emphasis on marketing to women. The campaign focuses on the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls.World No Tobacco Day 2010 will draw particular attention to the need to protect women and girls from the harmful effects of tobacco advertising and smoking in line with the WHO framework convention on tobacco.
According to WHO, in half of the 151 countries reviewed the progress of tobacco use among youth, there was not much difference between the number of men and women smokers.More girls used tobacco in countries such as Bulgaria, Chile, Colombia, Cook Islands, Croatia, Czech Republic, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria and Uruguay.
According to estimates of the latest National Family Health Survey, 57 percent men and 10.8 percent of women use tobacco in India.
