Eggs coming from Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa have been recalled in several states over potential salmonella contamination, linked to seven reported cases of Salmonella in Minessota. The affected cartons come in varying sizes and carry plant numbers P1026, P1413 and P1946, followed by a date code ranging from 136 to 225. A national outbreak of salmonella in eggs has sickened hundreds of people since May and appears to be ongoing, experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say. The outbreak has been tracked to in-shell eggs from Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa, which has launched a recall. They were distributed nationwide. The recall was launched Aug. 13. They come in cartons ranging from six to 18 eggs and are marked with plant numbers P-1026, P-1413 and P-1946. The eggs should be returned for a refund and not consumed.

The normal level of laboratory-confirmed cases nationally for this specific type is about 50 cases per week. When that jumped to 200 cases a week in June, public health workers realized they had a problem, says Casey Barton Behravesh, a veterinary epidemiologist with the CDC. Completely cooking eggs reduces the amount of salmonella bacteria in the eggs. Each case of laboratory-confirmed salmonella usually represents 30 cases that were not reported, public health research shows. People sickened in this outbreak could be in the thousands. Salmonella can cause fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea and usually lasts four to seven days. Authorities have received seven reports of Salmonella cases in Minnesota, and they believe that the eggs are the likely culprits.

Wright County Egg, which is based in Galt, Iowa, delivered eggs to food service companies and food distribution centers in eight states, which included Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The states of Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, Colorado and California are also included in the recall. Our primary concern is keeping Salmonella out of the food supply and away from consumers. As a precautionary measure, Wright County Egg also has decided to divert its existing inventory of shell eggs to a breaker, where they will be pasteurized to kill any Salmonella bacteria present. This recall is of shell eggs only. Other egg products produced by Wright County Eggs are not affected. Our farm strives to provide our customers with safe, high-quality eggs – that is our responsibility and our commitment.
