There are more than 2,000 strains of the bacteria, but only a dozen or so of those strains actually make people sick. In most cases, salmonella poisoning results in gastroenteritis, which is a severe stomach illness. Salmonella can result in typhoid fever, which is a disease with a high fever and inflamed intestines. The effects of typhoid fever can be very painful, and if you believe you are suffering from it you need to go see a doctor immediately. Typhoid fever is most found in the developing world.
A national salmonella outbreak that could have sickened thousands has led to the recall of 380 million eggs and renewed questions about whether it's feasible to keep the microbe — the most common bacterial source of food-borne illness in the nation — out of the hen house. The Food and Drug Administration has new egg safety rules that went into effect July 9 for producers with more than 50,000 hens.
