Recall of eggs in salmonella

There are more than 2,000 strains of the bacteria, but only a dozen or so of those strains actually make people sick. In most cases, salmonella poisoning results in gastroenteritis, which is a severe stomach illness. Salmonella can result in typhoid fever, which is a disease with a high fever and inflamed intestines. The effects of typhoid fever can be very painful, and if you believe you are suffering from it you need to go see a doctor immediately. Typhoid fever is most found in the developing world.

A national salmonella outbreak that could have sickened thousands has led to the recall of 380 million eggs and renewed questions about whether it's feasible to keep the microbe — the most common bacterial source of food-borne illness in the nation — out of the hen house. The Food and Drug Administration has new egg safety rules that went into effect July 9 for producers with more than 50,000 hens.

The Cook County Department of Health announced that it's investigating an outbreak of salmonella from pickles sold at Assi Supermarket in Niles. The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall notice for eggs sent to Illinois and seven other states that could be contaminated with salmonella. The eggs are marketed under the brand names Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s,Boomsma’s, Sunshine,Hillandale, Trafficanda, ,Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch farm and Kemps. Recall of eggs in salmonella outbreak grows to nearly 32 million cartons in Atlanta.

The distributor has gone on to recall all of the eggs, which span across a dozen different brands. The eggs were also served in restaurants and at events in the California area. Salmonella is widely distributed in the environment, so even if you destroy an entire flock, there's still a chance that it can be recontaminated from the environment.
