Pilot killed as Thai airliner hits control tower

The Bangkok Airways plane, carrying 72 people hit an age and unmanned control tower in the midst of reports of heavy rain. The aircraft was taken from the southern Thai town of Krabi, another popular tourist destination intention.

Officials said many of the wounded were tourists. Hospital sources told the BBC four Britons could be among the injured.

The nationalities of the others was not immediately known, but none could be said to be seriously injured. Poor weather "Unfortunately, we learned that the pilot of the plane are dead," said Kannik Kemavuthanon, director of the Department of civil aviation.

Ms. Unable said Bangkok Airways flight PG266 was an ATR-72 twin-turbo-propeller with 68 passengers, two pilots and two crew on board.

"The weather condition was very bad during the landing of large rain and wind," she says.
The plane struck a building that had been used as an AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL tower, but is now part of a hydrant, a local police official said.

"The big damage was at the front of the plane where the pilot was. It appears that he suffered from the effect," police Maj Col Sayan Sartsri told AP news agency.

Local reports said some of the injured passengers suffered broken bones. The wounded were taken to different hospitals on the island.

The resort island of Koh Samui is located about 300 miles south of Bangkok.
The airport runway was closed after the accident, and at least a Thai Airways flight was canceled.
