R.I.P in the Robert Wilson of the legendary Gap Band. The brother of Ronnie and Uncle Charlie Wilson who rounded out the legendary trio was 53 years old when he passed on Sunday. Despite the fact that Robert Wilson from the legendary Gap Band has recently passed away his music will live on. The "Godfather of Bass Guitar," Robert Wilson of the legendary Tulsa R&B and funk group the GAP Band, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 53, confirmed his publicist and manager, Don Jackson, in a late-night Sunday phone call to the Tulsa World.


Wilson died from a massive heart attack in his home, Jackson said. His family became concerned about him when they didn't receive their regular phone calls, and his adult son found his body on Sunday afternoon in Palmdale, Calif. Robert Wilson had been touring over the past few weeks, including a stop in his hometown in Tulsa, Okla. The Tulsa World reported that he died in Los Angeles on Sunday. They rocketed to stardom in the 1980s with hits like “Outstanding,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” and “Yearning for Your Love.” Wilson, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and his brothers, Charlie and Ronnie, started The Gap Band in the early '70s before moving to Los Angeles and finding fame as one of the premiere funk bands of the era.

Don Jackson said that Wilson died from a massive heart attack in his home, his publicist and manager. His family became concerned about him when they didn’t receive their regular phone calls from him throughout the day. His adult son found Wilson’s body on Sunday afternoon in Palmdale, Calif. The news outlet said he expressed joy about returning to his boyhood home of Tulsa and an upcoming festival headlining show and following tour. The Aug. 28 show will go on as planned, but will now be a memorial to Wilson.
